A while ago Girls in Football announced a partnership with the organisation SportTrades, headed by Rob McAvoy.
The partnership’s aim is to help increase the investment within the women’s game and make sure that women of all levels of football get the support and funding they need to keep going.
We are very close to agreeing a deal with a major international brand as well as several smaller entities, which will help fund this investment in women’s football.
The Women’s game has a vast amount of potential and England and the FA need to give the game its full support so it can fulfil its potential.
Our women have done fantastically in recent years, reaching the Quarter Finals of the last women’s World Cup and grabbing much attention last year when Hope Powell’s girls were runners up to the mighty German side at the European Championships. It was a great achievement for the team and the first time our girls have reached a major final in 25 years, which is incredible – especially considering the men have not done so in 44 years!
2011 should be a great year for women’s footbal, with the launch of the summer Women’s Super League. The league will be made up of 8+ clubs and will be televised by a major broadcaster. The WSL will inspire girls all over the country to get involved with football and sport in general and give them proper role models to look up to (unlike some of the tasteless stars on Big Brother, etc.)
Our partnership aims to help many clubs around the country. Our ambition is to help these girls and clubs get the funding they need to have their own kit and sufficient equipment to keep performing.
We realise that some of you (clubs, managers, players) have been waiting for good news on this front for several months now. Talks have taken longer than expected, but in a good way! We’re really close to securing one major deal and several smaller packages, which we hope to be able to announce formally in the next month.
Please bear with us – it will be worth the wait! This year we hope to distribute c.£100,000 in sponsorship among various female teams and clubs, ranging from needy development teams right up to (equally needy) Premiership clubs.
