Brighton ladies make comeback to win Sussex Cup

Brighton & Hove Albion regained the Sussex County Cup, but only after coming from two goals behind to win
3-2 after extra time victory against Lewes in the Final at Lancing.

The Premier League side were rocked as Lewes, from the South East Combination, roared into a two-goal lead inside the opening twenty minutes.

Firstly, Janine Daly headed them in front and Helen Whitton extended their lead by firing home a 25-yard free kick.

Vicky Vickery renewed hopes for Brighton five minutes before half time as she pulled a goal back when driving home from the edge of the area.

Lewes held on during the second half but their resistance was broken with two minutes of normal time remaining, Kim Stenning scoring from 20 yards to level the scores and send the match into extra time.

With five minutes of the extra period played, Brighton took the lead for the first time in the match with a decisive strike from Gemma Fraser, who scored from an acute angle after rounding the keeper.

After the game, it was announced Lewes manager Jacquie Agnew was standing down after seven successful years at the helm, in which she has led the side from the South East Counties League to their present position near the top of the South East Combination, having won the County Cup last season.
