The Ravers really should have won today’s cup tie at Burton but we were outdone by the Burton keeper who had a really excellent game.
The match started badly for the girls. A Burton free kick after just one minute flew into the top corner of the net and gave Louise no chance.
But the girls piled the pressure on and Macey brought us level after 20 minutes following a nice one/two with Katie.
Unfortunately, an unusual lapse of concentration in the Ravers defence a couple of minutes later allowed a Burton player to prod the ball home from close range and put the home side back in front.
Most of the second half was played in and around the Burton penalty area but time and time again their goalkeeper pulled off great saves. We had to wait until Chloe struck in the 47th minute to bring the score level at 2-2.
At full time the score was still 2-2 so we played five minutes each way extra time. Again, we were all over Burton but we just couldn’t get past the ‘keeper.
So the game went to a penalty shoot-out. To the girls credit, I had no difficulty getting volunteers to take the kicks and in the time honoured tradition the team linked arms in the centre circle to watch Louise try to win the game for the Ravers.
But luck was against us and we lost the shoot-out 3-2.
Fair play to Burton, they worked hard. But it was disappointing to lose, especially via the lottery of a penalty shoot out.
next game: away to Greenbank on the weekend 7/8 January.
