League table after today's game

This top of the table match was expected to be a tough, close game and it proved to be just that.

We started a bit slowly (I seem to remember saying that before) on a bumpy Westcliff pitch that made it very difficult for the Ravers team to play their usual passing style of football. It was also sunny and warm and we don’t like playing in the heat!

Long balls out of the Westcliff defence were difficult to defend as it was impossible to predict which way the ball would bounce. But Hannah and Lauren came through the test and our midfield trio of Leah, Macey and Jodie worked very hard, running back to help out whenever Westcliff had the ball. They also provided good, close support to a suntanned Chloe who made a welcome return to the Ravers team today.

As the first half wore on it looked like we would go into the break at 0-0. But with a few minutes to go Chloe gave way to Rhiannan and our Super Sub didn’t disappoint, notching her fourth goal of the season from close range just before half time.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first. Westcliff battled hard and we kept pressing. But goals were hard to come by, Westcliff looked threatening on the break and so it was a relief when Jodie broke through the home defence and slammed one in from five yards out.

We had more chances to score in the last few minutes as the six player Westcliff team tired but the ball just wouldn’t go in.

Overall, this was an excellent performance. The girls played tough, gritty football and deserved to win. Our subs played a full part too, every one of them did their bit.

But credit to Westcliff, they never gave up and pushed us to the limit.

Our player of the match today was Alex. She never stopped encouraging the team and pulled off one of the most amazing saves I’ve seen in 7 a side football to stop Westcliffe bringing the score back to 2-1 with five minutes to go.

Super team performance, super subs and super saves :)
