| Ashley with Iain Dowie |
My name is Ashley Williamson, I am a FA Level 2, FAYA Module 1 and Module 2 coach. Here is a session I have designed to coach running with the ball. To get in touch send me a message through Twitter.
Split the group into groups of three, have three players at each end of the channel (channel size 25 yards by 10 yards). Players are to run with the ball down to the opposite group and join the back of that line. The person at the front of the line repeats the same routine, this continues until each player has a turn. This will stay unopposed so players can get a feel for the technical detail.
Set up
Technical detail
1. Players should get low and drive with the laces of their foot
2. Push the ball out in front in attempt to not maintain stride pattern
3. Large touches
To develop the session the practice will become opposed by adding a defender. Remember, if the defender is in front the running becomes dribbling. Therefore, in attempt to provide the session with consistency, the defender will apply pressure from behind. Furthermore, when the first person runs with the ball to the opposite group, the person behind him or her in the line will chase them. This encourages the player with the ball to think about first touch, pace and how to get away from the defender. The player who has completed the run with the ball will become the defender.
Technical detail
1. Positive first touch
2. Fast pace
Now to conclude and develop, the set up changes (two 20×20 yard boxes 25 yard apart) and it becomes a mini game. Each box will provide an area for the 4 vs 2 games. The team of four are to string together 5 passes, which will win team five points, the team of two players will act as defenders. If the defenders are successful in winning the ball and dribbling it out of bounds they win five points. The play will continue until the team of four are successful in their five passes. The player with the last touch, from the team of four, will swap with the other player who had the last touch from the other box. Therefore, each team of four are effectively swapping one player and the ball with the other team. (The player’s that will swap must use the ‘running with the ball’ technique whilst travelling to the other box) develop the mini games increase the amount passes the teams have to make. Finally, make the session fair by ensuring each player is defender at a point throughout the games.
Technical detail
1. When to pass and dribble (in the 4v2 box)
2. Movement
3. Communication
