Chelsea Ladies strive for 3rd in the league

There are only three games left for Chelsea Ladies, who are striving to maintain third place in the League.

The first is a home match against Leeds this Sunday, a side we beat 1-0 only a couple of weeks ago, before we travel to Blackburn and then Nottingham Forest for our final two fixtures.

The Ladies are still challenging for third place in the League, while Arsenal seem to have cemented their first place finish after rising to top at the weekend.

It was a 1-0 away win over Leeds that secured Arsenal first place and although there are still three games to go for the Blues, Arsenal have only played 16 fixtures to our 19.

They’re also five points ahead of second-place Leeds, who have played one game more than the north London outfit but sit with the same points as Chelsea (40).

As well as Leeds, Everton are a threat to our third-place finish. The Toffees are expected to rise to second when they complete their games in hand, having currently amassed 37 points from the same amount of fixtures as Arsenal.

That’s not to be sniffed at and will worry the Ladies as we head into the final three games. A win in every one would take our point tally to 49 while Everton have the chance of gaining another 18 from their remaining fixtures.

One of those games will be against Leeds, who still have clashes with Arsenal, Blackburn, Watford and us before the end of the season. The Ladies will be hoping Arsenal take points from Leeds, as a loss in that game would take us past them in the League, if we win our games.

There is still a chance Chelsea could finish second, should Leeds and Everton fail to win any of their remaining fixtures, although this is obviously a big ask.

What is clear is that, at this point in the season, no side currently below Everton in the League will be a worry to the top four.

Doncaster Rover Belles sit in fifth place, with 31 points from 20 games. They’re equal to Sunderland, who have the same points from the same amount of games, but below those two, in seventh place, is Millwall, who have a mere 21 points from 22 games.

Chelsea’s main concern is going to be Leeds. At the moment we’re on equal points, should that stay the same after our remaining fixtures, then the worry will be Leeds’ goal advantage.

Leeds have a nine-goal advantage over us. If we were to lose this weekend and then they lose to Arsenal, they would still stay ahead of us in the League.

But for now Chelsea just need to concentrate on winning our final fixtures, and scoring as many goals as possible.

One defeat could see us finishing the season fourth, one place behind our final position last year, while three wins could put us second, one place up from last year.
