EBBSFLEET UNITED 2 ENFIELD TOWN 0
Enfield Town Ladies slipped to a surprise 2-0 defeat away to Ebbsfleet United in a match that they were expected to win easily. Jay Blackie scored in either half for Ebbsfleet. Enfield Town manager John Abbott said “I want to take nothing away from Ebbsfleet who deserved their win but we were poor and just never looked like we deserved anything from the game. We had too many players missing and it is something we need to sort out.” Enfield remain in 4th place.
The game started in torrential rain driving into the faces of the Enfield team and in the first minute a long ball forward was chased by a forward and an Enfield defender but it went through to Jo Ayre who slid to the edge of the area with the ball. The referee decided that Ayre had carried the ball out of her area and awarded a free kick, even though nobody else agreed with his decision, which was played to the far post and returned to the six yard box for Jay Blackie to force in despite a desperate effort to save it by Ayre. 1-0 (1 min)
Enfield almost levelled when Claire Gooch got her head to a Kerrie Marlborough corner but it was cleared to Katie Wilding and her shot was a fraction too high. A corner for Ebbsfleet was cleared to Blackie who hit a firm shot that struck an Enfield defender and flew over the bar for another corner. Blackie almost undid all her hard work after a foot up challenge was punished with just a free kick and seconds later after being pulled up for another foul she kicked the ball away and received a booking. From the free kick by Marlborough Sheree Oliver knocked the ball down but a defender reacted quickest to clear the danger.
Sara Sinclair was brought down as she attacked the home defence but the referee waved play on as Wilding took control of the ball and fired in a shot that took a deflection off a defender that caused it to bounce harmlessly to the keeper. Sinclair was sent away again by Oliver and although she outpaced the defence the keeper was quickly out to smoother the ball. Amy Eve laid a clever pass to Leanne Mabey who shot early only to hit a defender. Blackie crossed deep for Ebbsfleet to a team mate arriving late at the far post but the shot was sliced well wide. Mel Bishop was booked for a tackle from behind on Katie Wilding and then Lisa Fulgence robbed Kelly Herrett and shot straight to Ayre as Ebbsfleet had the final attack of the half.
A quick free kick by Wilding to Eve resulted in Eve just failing to get her shot over the keeper. An Ebbsfleet attacked looked to have broken down with a misplaced pass but Pip Lawrence picked up the loose ball and hit it into the area to Fulgence who laid it back into the path of Blackie who hit it on the run giving Ayre no chance to save it. 2-0 (52 min)
Marlborough went on a rare run down the left wing and crossed deep to Oliver who played the ball back into the middle for Sinclair to shoot but Faye Baker in the Ebbsfleet goal pulled off a great save as stuck up a hand as she went the wrong way and saved the effort with a defender hacking the loose ball away. A nasty clash of heads saw Oliver continue with a large bruise and lump above her eye and Ebbs fleet’s Emily Wells leave the pitch with suspected concussion.
Persistence by Stavroulla Panayiotou saw her emerged from a crowded part of the pitch with the ball and pick out Wilding who lifted the ball over the home defence but it was cleared as Sinclair bore down on it. Kelly Philpot shrugged off Marlborough but then shot to Ayre. Marlborough was forced off minutes later with a foot injury. Oliver pounced on a loose ball and fired goalwards but it curled away after looking like it was heading for the top corner. Oliver slipped a pass into the run of Sinclair who rode a couple of challenges before shooting wide of the keeper and the post.
Bishop was quickly onto a poor touch by an Enfield player but should have done better than shooting wide. The game ended with Candice McNeil seeing a cross hit a defender and spinning to the Ebbsfleet keeper and then Gooch having a Beth Demery free kick taken off her head as she prepared to head in at the far post.
Enfield Town M.O.M. was Sheree Oliver who kept battling away in the middle of the pitch even after injury following a clash of heads.
