ENFIELD TOWN 3 CAMBRIDGE WOMEN 2

Enfield Town Ladies kicked off the new season with a 3-2 home victory against Cambridge Women. Kerrie Marlborough and Miranda Hall gave Enfield a 2 goal advantage at the break before Sara Sinclair extended it to 3 and then Cambridge set up a tense finish as Nat Richardson and Samara Nche pulled two goals back. Enfield manager John Abbott said “I am delighted with the win in our opening game and it gives us a solid platform to build on as we get up to full strength. The new players all contributed to the team to give us a few options as we go along.”

Enfield almost made the dream start to the game as Miranda Hall crossed for Sara Sinclair to head down for Katie Wilding but Wilding steered her shot just wide. Emma Jenkins attacked down the right for Cambridge but her cross was too deep and drifted out. Fran Boggi crossed from the corner and Liz Pamplin could only palm the ball to Wilding at the far post but Wilding was unable to stab the ball the right side of the post. Sophie Thompson headed an Emily Ingle free kick wide when she might have done better from an unmarked position for the visitors. A Jenkins cross was too deep but it was retrieved and laid back to a team mate who drove a shot over the bar as Cambridge pushed on.

Hall looked to have a good chance as she powered into the area but Cambridge defender Hannah Goodchild stretched a foot out to concede a corner and from the Beth Demery taken corner Claire Gooch had a header cleared off the line and the ball was forced out of the area only as far as Wilding who picked our central defender Kerrie Marlborough who was still up for from the corner and Marlborough cleverly turned in the area, went past one defender, side stepped another and then shot across Pamplin and inside the far post to put Enfield ahead. 1-0 (20 min)

Hall smartly chipped the ball across the area into the path of Sara Sinclair who steered the ball wide as Pamplin raced towards her. Gooch sent the ball over the oncoming opposition into the path of Sinclair who timed her run perfectly to spring the offside trap and with only Hall keeping up with her Sinclair drew the keeper out before squaring the ball for Hall to smash it home. 2-0 (27 min)

Demery chipped the ball long for Sinclair to run onto but Pamplin was out quick to clear the danger. Jenkins sent Almundena Soria Sancho clear to slot past Jo Ayre but a flag was raised for offside.

An intended clearance by Enfield rebounded off the referee into the path of Thompson but Ayre saved in the one on one battle and pushed her wide from where the ball was laid back to Soria Sancho who played it into the arms of Ayre. Jenkins tested the patience of the official once too often and was booked for an accumulation of fouls and from the resulting free kick Enfield were given a corner that upset Cambridge Demery played it deep to the far post where Sinclair rifled it into the roof of the net. 3-0 (55 min)

Another Demery corner kick saw Gooch have a header cleared off the line. A long ball saw Sophia Piotrowska and Gooch involved in a race to the ball which Piotrowska won but Gooch stretched to tackle her and Ayre was forced to handle the ball and to most peoples amazement the referee awarded an indirect free kick for a back pass. After the usual delay as everyone set up for it a simple touch by Ingle allowed Nat Richardson to put everything behind her shot that flew into the net. 3-1 (61 min)

Boggi slid in a pass that saw Sinclair on her own with just the keeper to beat and the game seemed to go into slow motion as she knocked the ball past Pamplin from a tight angle and saw it rebound off the far post and roll out to a defender. Lucy Du Plooy was booked for hauling down Sinclair close to the halfway line as Sinclair tried to sprint clear. Katie Wilding was booked shortly after for dissent she questioned the position of the ball when Cambridge attempted to take a quick free kick. Amy Eve and Stavroulla Panayiotou combined to bring the ball out of defence and send Sinclair away but the resulting cross was just ahead of Hall. Samara Nche and Gooch chased the ball into the Enfield area where Nche managed to turn back inside Gooch and then lift the ball over Ayre to set up a tense final few minutes. 3-2 (86 min)

Enfield held on but with a scare as Nche looped a shot to Ayre with on of the last touches of the game.

Enfield Town M.O.M. was Beth Demery for a calm game at the back and some quality dead ball kicks.
