ENFIELD TOWN 4 LEWES 2

Enfield Town Ladies got back to winning ways with their first ever home victory over Lewes who have been a thorn in the side in previous seasons. Miranda Hall and an own goal put the hosts ahead in the first half and a Sara Sinclair double seemed to have put the result beyond doubt before Charlotte Bennett and Kirsty Spice ensured a nervy finish. Enfield manager John Abbott said “It’s nice to finally beat them at home and we are now looking a lot stronger as the squad are settling down and everyone is back for us plus Kelly Herrett looked good on her debut. We created a lot of chances and just need to start to put them away.” Enfield climbed up to 5th in the table a point off the top.

The game took a while to get going it was 7 minutes before Enfield created the first opening as Katie Wilding and Beth Lovell gave Sara Sinclair a chance that was blocked and Fran Boggi hit the loose ball straight to Patricia Gower in the Lewes goal. Almost immediately Sinclair had another but Gower came out on top in their one on one battle. Boggi slid a pass into Wilding who cleverly turned and shot but Gower was alert and gathered it in. Sheree Oliver won the ball in midfield as Lewes tried to push out played a pass through the defence into the path of Sinclair who drew the keeper and retreating defenders to her before passing across to Miranda Hall who thundered the ball into the net as Lewes again tried to recover. 1-0 (10 min)

Hall tried to repay Sinclair by pulling the ball back to her from the line but Sinclair hit the ball too well and it sprung back off the crossbar. Hall cut across the edge of the area until she saw an opening for a shot but Gower saved it well. Wilding lifted a loose ball into the area and under pressure from Sinclair a defender looped a header towards her own goal and although Gower stretched and got a hand to it she couldn’t keep it out of the net. 2-0 (13 min)

Boggi hit a powerful cross and Sinclair got in front of Gower but headed the ball wide of the near post. Wilding and Hall combined for Sinclair to put the ball into the net but an off side flag ruled it out and shortly after Hall picked out Boggi in the area but Boggi was left in a heap by a firm but perfectly fair challenge as she went to shoot. The game become a mess as the weather turned foul and Kirsty Spice curled a shot to Enfield keeper Jo Ayre and Hall was stopped by a good challenge in the area by Katie Hodges at the expense on a corner. On the stroke of half time Sinclair powered into the area and rode her luck as the ball stuck with her despite a few tackles but then she shot against the bar again!

Enfield got a great start after the break when they received an indirect free kick that Wilding slid down the side of the area to Boggi who drove it low and hard into the six yard area where Beth Demery stepped over it and Sinclair steered it in at the far post. 3-0 (47 min)

Sinclair again went for a direct run and after beating two players she shot straight to Gower. Wilding won a drop ball in the centre circle and passed to Beth Lovell who slipped the ball between two defenders for Sinclair to advance goalwards and when she shot early it flew into the top corner giving Gower no chance of reaching it. 4-0 (58 min)

Enfield had further opportunities as Lovell was crowded out in the area as she tried to turn and then sliced another shot wide, Boggi shot wide after Hall had failed to control a cross from Jo Spinks and Spinks then crossed too close to Gower with Enfield players queuing up for the ball.

Charlotte Bennett got her head to a corner and it bounced in to the net deceiving a home player on the post and it looked nothing more than a consolation goal at that stage 4-1 (82 min) but Emma Wood wasted a good opening by shooting to Ayre and then Kirsty Spice hit a great shot from distance as she slipped and the ball curled into the top corner. 4-2 (84 min)

Enfield looked a bit nervous for the final few minutes but neither side managed to create any further clear chances.

Enfield Town M.O.M. was Jo Spinks who raced up and down the pitch on the right doing her share helping out the defence and attack.
