ENFIELD TOWN 1 LUTON TOWN 3
Enfield Town Ladies slipped to defeat in their second match of the season at home to Luton Town by 3-1. Laveena Betts (2) and Candice Davies put Luton 3-0 up before Fran Boggi scored a late consolation goal from the penalty spot. Enfield Manager John Abbott said “It’s a disappointing result after last week but with everyone dropping points so far this season it’s not the end of the world but we must put this behind us and get on with building up our points tally.” Enfield drop to 9th place but only one point separates the top 10.
Enfield hoped to get off to a good start in their new ORC Sport sponsored kit but things soon whet wrong as Candice McNeil tried to see the ball out of play but Nicki Livingstone managed to keep it in play and then cut it back for Laveena Betts to fire into the net. 0-1 (3min)
A ball over the top of the home defence presented Livingstone with another chance but she shot straight to Jo Ayre in the Enfield goal. A through ball looked to have set Enfield’s Miranda Hall away but Carly Cowell did well to get back and clear the danger. A high ball into the Enfield area saw Michelle Byrne backing into Ayre but Ayre held firm and dropped onto the ball as it rolled loose. Betts raced onto a pass after looking yards off side but wasted the chance by shooting well wide with just Ayre to beat. Betts and Kate Davis exchanged passes to create an opening but just as Betts got her shot in Claire Gooch stretched and blocked it.
Hall sent Fran Boggi in for an Enfield chance but Sian Hall saved it with the follow up cross being cleared as Sara Sinclair tried to reach it. A free kick by Hall sailed through a packed Luton penalty area without anyone being able to get a touch to it. Hall made it to the line and her cross was cleared to Beth Lovell who saw her effort from 18 yards well held by the keeper. A cross by Amy Eve saw 2 Luton players leave it to each other but they recovered and cleared the ball before any Enfield player could benefit from it.
Luton weathered the storm from Enfield and then had the better of the last minutes of the half as Davis played in Nicola Henman who shot against the far post and Kerrie Marlborough reacted quickest to clear the ball and then moments later Davis headed for goal but was stopped in the area but a perfectly timed tackle by Gooch that even went off for a goal kick off the attacker.
Luton started the second half as they had the first and Livingstone lifted the ball over the home defence to Henman who was forced wide but kept her head and squared the ball for Betts to knock the ball into the net at the far post. 0-2 (47 min)
Enfield attacked down the right and when the cross arrived with Boggi she fired in a shot on target that Sian Hall could only manage to touch over the bar for a corner. When the corner was flicked on by Lovell it dropped to Sinclair who snatched at the ball and fired over from close range. Enfield had an indirect free kick which Eve touched for Hall to fire wide. Sinclair raced in to close down the keeper on a poor back pass but Sian Hall just managed to get rid of it in time. Olivia Mari making her first team debut threaded a pass to Sheree Oliver who turned and shot but a defender deflected it behind for a corner.
Luton’s Candice Davies stabbed a good chance wide after Livingstone had crossed to her and then Livingstone wasted a good position when she crossed into the side netting. Sinclair picked out Oliver who crossed for Hall but she shot wide of the post with the keeper struggling. Boggi gave Sinclair a sight of goal but the shot was cleared to Mari who shot wide of the goal.
Luton gain gained the upper hand as Byrne crossed for Davies to shoot but Ayre pushed it around the post at full stretch for a corner. A loose ball found its way to Livingstone who took her time to bring the ball under control and chipped the ball in only for it to bounce away off the bar. A miss hit cross by Betts skipped up and Ayre was forced to push it away for another corner. Ayre raced out of her area and got her body in the way of a shot by Davies with Gooch tidying up behind her. Davies again escaped the defence and although Ayre won the initial one on one battle it was Davies who reacted first to then lift the rebound over the prostrate Ayre into the net. 0-3 (90+3 min)
In the last minute of the game Sinclair made her way into the Luton area before she was brought crashing down and Boggi scored a late consolation goal from the resulting spot kick.
Enfield Town M.O.M. was Sheree Oliver who never gave up and put in a strong performance in midfield baking up both defence and attack when needed.
