ENFIELD TOWN LADIES F.C.
SOUTH EAST COMBINATION
SUNDAY 10/10/2010
ENFIELD TOWN 3 MK DONS1

Enfield Town Ladies returned to winning ways with a very entertaining 3-1 victory over MK Dons who entered the game in second place two places above their hosts. Katie Wilding, Sara Sinclair and Miranda Hall scored for Enfield with Christie Turner scoring a consolation penalty for MK Dons. Enfield manager John Abbott said “The team responded well after last week and put in a far better performance against one of the top sides in the league to fully deserve the win. Play like that every time and there will be nothing to worry about.” Enfield remain in 4th place

Enfield captain Claire Gooch had to be switched on in the very first minute as Kelly Bingham looked to race into the area but Gooch got in a touch that sent the ball back to keeper Jo Ayre who cleared it away for a throw that when it was taken saw Lauren Goodier loop a shot onto the bar and the rebound was put wide for a goal kick. Enfield spent the first part of the game easily soaking up the long balls by MK Dons and when they finally broke out on 14 minutes with a free kick by Gooch that was headed across the area by a Dons defender Katie Wilding took a touch to control the ball and allow it cross her body before dispatching it with a her left foot on the half volley into the net giving Dons keeper Amy Walker no chance. 1-0 (14 min)

A pass over the Dons defence freed Sara Sinclair whose cross gave Walker problems that she only collected at the second attempt. Sinclair was beaten to a pass by Walker at the edge of the area after Miranda Hall had picked out her run. Dons threatened down the right and it took a good defensive header by Gooch to cut out the danger. Bingham attacked down the right and Goodier helped the ball on past Ayre towards Emily Mann but Sheree Oliver had tracked her back and cleared by the post as Mann lined up a shot. Bingham again tried down the right and this time Gooch swept the ball on out of the area and then another cross from the right was volleyed over at full stretch by Goodier. Oliver broke down the right and crossed but Hall was blocked as she tried to shoot and the clearance was stopped by Jo Spinks who set up Sinclair but Walker saved well.

The half ended with Wilding feeding Hall who shot early just wide of the far post with Sinclair throwing herself head first at the post trying to get a touch that would have been a goal. Mann used her strength to hold off a defender and then turn to shoot but Ayre was perfectly positioned to collect it. Sinclair latched onto a pass to shoot at Walker; Hall pulled a ball back from the line that Sinclair stepped over to allow Wilding a shot but it lacked the power to beat Walker and then Kate Costin thumped a ball forward that Bingham could only lift over the goal from a tight angle.

Just 30 seconds after the break Hall picked out Oliver who shot from distance just over the bar with Walker beaten and rooted to her line. Hall was quickly onto a poor clearance by Walker following a back pass but the keeper redeemed herself with an excellent right handed save at the expense of a corner. Beth Demery lifted the ball over a Dons player to send Hall away on the left and her ball into the area was missed by a defender and Sinclair was only able to steer it to Walker while stretching. A couple of passes out of defence found Hall in the centre circle and she held the ball until the perfect moment to slide it into the run of Sinclair who drew the keeper out and calmly slotted it past her into the net. 2-0 (62 min)

Beth Lovell passed to Oliver whose cross in saw Hall and a defender get to it together with the ball spinning out and to safety. Bingham tried to escape the home defence but Sub Candice McNeil and Kelly Herrett kept pace forcing her wide and she shot weakly to Ayre. Goodier received the ball a long way out and with no options presenting them selves she shot just over with Ayre stepping back on her line but being happy to watch it go. Charlotte Wright made a tired looking run into the area and appeared to fall over Lovell but the referee decided that a foul had been committed and awarded a penalty that Christie Turner scored with a low shot to the right. 2-1 (89 min)

Dons came close to an equaliser as Bingham reacted to a loose ball in the Enfield area but turned and shot wide and was instantly punished for it as Lovell cut out a clearance and laid the ball off to Oliver who crossed behind Sinclair but into the path of Hall who took a step forward and then rifled in a shot from the edge of the area that flashed past Walker into the net. 3-1 (90+2 Mins)

Enfield Town M.O.M. was a hard choice with many candidates but Claire Gooch was the pick with a calm performance and strong marshalling of her defensive team mates doing the perfect captains job.
