Gillingham started 2010 in sparkling form with a resounding 8-1 win away from home at second-placed Milton Keynes Dons.
The Gills fell behind with MK scoring the opener after just three minutes, but Ian Varley’s side came roaring back and led 2-1 at the break.
Gillingham then made their class tell in a dominant second-half display that saw them score six unanswered goals.
Top scorer Ashlee Hincks led the way with five goals, while Danni Farmer (2) and Jodie Mugford (1) weighed in with strikes from midfield.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2010,” said Gillingham Ladies’ captain Becky Lyon.
“The game was sluggish from the start but after going down 1-0 we worked hard in bad conditions and got the result we needed.
“Ian (Varley) gave us a bit of a talking to at half time and made sure we all knew our jobs and in the second half we went out there and got the job done.
“Once we started playing our football they couldn’t match us. Individually everyone did their job and we got a great result.”
Midfielder Danni Farmer scored twice in the match and said the result was a statement of intent from the Gills, who are going all out for the title this season.
“Once we got into our stride we were a class above and ruthless,” she said.
“That was definitely a message to the rest of the league.”
Manager Varley agreed.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the result today,” he said.
“To go away from home against the second-placed team in the league and to win so convincingly is fantastic and gets us going again in the new year.”
