Essential goalkeeper skills
Kicking from the hand
How?
“Kicking from the hand (or drop-kicking) is a bit like a rugby move. Hold the ball out in front of you in both hands, or in the palm of the hand opposite to your strongest foot. As you move forward, release the ball. Bring your kicking leg through to meet the bottom half of the ball before it bounces. You can let the ball bounce and take it on the half-volley if you want to kick the ball at a lower height. The fuller the follow-through, the greater the power – but also the greater the chance of a mis-kick.”
Why?
The drop-kick is the quickest way for a keeper to get the ball upfield. Some keepers (men only, as far as we know) have been known to score from within their own area, so the keeper’s long kick is a useful tool for the team.
