Saturday 19th June saw the first Tri-Borough festival take place at the London Marathon Playing Fields in Greenwich. Sally Dolan from the SELKENT League and football development officer for London Marathon Playing fields foundation, Steve Bilbe, Competitions Manager for Greenwich and Emma Barnes, Women’s & Girls FDO for London FA worked together to get this festival launched, with the idea behind it to help increase girls football participation out of school time. The hope is that this festival will grow in the number of teams participating the following season and continue from this.
Schools from Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham were invited along and schools were able to enter teams in school years 3 & 4 (U9) and years 5 & 6 (U11). There were 12 teams entered in total, and support from teachers, parents and guardians was excellent, and along with the sun shining it was a fantastic day of football for all involved.
Another initiative that the London FA and Sally Dolan hope to kick start from this festival is the introduction of 4 v 4 football for girls. More information to be announced soon.
