Fabio Capello should perhaps take a leaf out of the Hope Powell book of straight talking.
After watching his team’s abysmal display in the goalless draw against Algeria at the World Cup on Friday, Capello stopped short of lambasting his players. The following evening England’s women produced a tenacious fightback against Spain to snatch a draw from a two-goal deficit and, though it kept them on top of their World Cup qualifying group and well on course to reach next year’s finals in Germany, Powell, the national coach, was not so restrained.
Naturally she was pleased with the result in Aranda de Duero, near Valladollid. But the performance? “We’re a team expected to win this group and rightly so,” she said, “but you won’t do it with performances like ours in the first half. We were shocking. There was more urgency and fight in the second half and, if there’s one positive I can take, that’s it – but some of the players have got to take a long, hard look at themselves.”
