03 SEPT 2010 – Greater London Women’s League side LEYTON FC LADIES today unveil a fantastic 24-player line-up for league and cup season 2010/11, with rumours of four more signings before the September month-end. The division 1 promotional hopefuls is banking that its ‘newbie/veteran’ combination will bring success this term.
The East-End side brought a whopping 15 ‘newbies’ during the closed season to its Lea Bridge Road ground and issued unique squad numbers ranging from 1 to 48. But club sources refused to confirm why.
An insider said: “The idea always was to have a squad of 28 players – we’re four short of that. We’re in a better position than most teams in terms of numbers, but we must make that work in our favour.”
Locked-down returness include veteran goalkeeper Sally Barton, full back Ka-Mei Cheung, midfielders Miranda Uzomba, Kirsty Graham, Joann Pawley, Lavinia English, Connie Suffren and strikers Louie ‘SOV’ Harman and golden-boot girl Sarah Garlick. Fullback Jennifer Guest, injured in the closed-season, could also return in mid-October.
Manager Tony Andre says: “Too much is never enough. We’ve brought in experienced players who will complement the existing group. We’ve snaffled Janice Healy from Boreham Wood, Quebec-born All-Star Mo Mitchell-Carvalho, Dutch girl Hannah van Bruggen and former Dynamo North London striker Kylie Worster.
“As a bonus we’re also reaping the benefits of years of quality coaching from Linda Veryard and Reg Dixie, in that former Leyton Orient players have returned in goalkeeper Natasha Lavery and forward Lizzie Tucker, plus Leyton O’s midfielder Yaz Cakli has also stepped-up to jump into the mixer with the big girls. It’s exciting times ahead.”
Andre refused to be drawn on any new arrivals saying: “You should never close the door to football potential, it gets better so much better.”
