S-Tech Cambridgeshire Womens League Cup Final
Exning ladies 0 Long Road Ladies 5
Newmarket Town FC provided the perfect venue for the top of the table clash between Exning Ladies and Long Road Ladies for the S-Tech Cambridgeshire Women’s League Cup Final.
The match started well and both teams looked alert and keen to win every ball. Long Road looked the more dangerous with midfield players who would not have looked out of place in an athletics sprint team. They provided effective crosses which, at first, were not met cleanly by the strikers but the signs looked ominous for the Suffolk opposition. Exning had a few attacks but were not able to test the Long Road keeper.
The match began to take shape when Long Road took the lead on 9 minutes. Exning did come close to scoring an equaliser, when the ball was lobbed over the Long Road keeper, but the ball hit the top of the cross bar.
Long Road soon got a second goal when a fine strike from the edge of the box hit the bottom left corner of the Exning net. Long Road continued to dominate, despite the hard work from the Exning players they were not able to keep pace or create enough chances. Long Road added to their tally taking a 3-0 lead into half time.
The second half started badly for Exning when any hope of a recovery was soon extinguished with Long Road scoring a fourth within minutes of the restart. The game was out of reach once the fifth goal found the net.
Exning did have an opportunity for a consolation goal when a defender gave away a penalty with a handball. The Long Road keeper remained untested however when the penalty kick disappointingly sailed over the cross bar. Exning battled throughout and did continue to work hard but Long Road were in a comfort zone and had secured their second League Cup in successive seasons.
