New 6-aside league starting in Staffordshire

THREE new 6-aside leagues – including one for women – are appealing for teams ahead of their forthcoming launches.

The women’s community six-a-side league will run every Tuesday at Clayton County High School as part of a nationwide initiative to promote female football.

The venture, which is supported by Arsenal and England star Kelly Smith, is aimed at satisfying the growing demand for competitive women’s football in England.

“I grew up playing small-sided football,” says Smith. “It’s a great way to improve your technique and fitness.

“It’s really easy to get five or six friends together to take part, so this is a great opportunity for local ladies to get involved in the game.”

The weekly sessions will run from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesdays and cost £3-per-player each week.

Further information is available on-line at www.ladiesleagues.com or by calling 0845 0745709.

The second six-a-side venture is being promoted by Soccersixes on all-weather pitches at the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre on the Leek Road campus of Staffordshire University.

Trophies and cash prizes will be on offer, together with the chance to take on teams from across the country in a nationwide cup.

The weekly cost is £3.25 per player for the Sunday evening sessions, and further information on the leagues is available at www.soccersixes.net or by calling 07896 568501/0870 3300888.

Finally, Stone six-a-side league is seeking new teams to enter its weekly competition at the Alleyne’s Sports Centre.

Outdoor matches under floodlights take place on Monday evenings from January 25 at a cost of £27 per team.
