Rachel Yankey supports disability football

England star Rachel Yankey supported a London boroughs girl’s disability football day in Enfield last week.Despite the heat, 30 players from Whitefields (Waltham Forest), Cedar Hall (Essex) & Woodfield (Surrey) Schools enjoyed a morning of fun coaching sessions delivered by Football Development staff from Middx, Surrey, Essex & the AFA. Rachel was on hand to sign autographs and have pictures taken with the teams, and was really keen to take part in the coaching delivery.

After lunch, the schools then took part in a mini 6-aside tournament before it was time to pack up and head back home with certificates and RY autographs in hand.

Jon Whittingham Disability Football Development Officer for Middlesex FA said of the day “This is a fantastic first step for the girls, the schools and the County FA’s to work together to showcase and develop girls disability football in London. It is great to see the girls having fun and enjoying the experience of a training session with Rachel. We now hope that this event will become an annual festival that will inspire other girls to get involved in disability football, with the ultimate aim of creating more playing opportunities for them to become involved with.”

It is hoped this will become an annual event at a ground in central London, and plans are already afoot to develop Under 16 Girls Disability County Representative teams in 2010/11.
