Ravers awards: who won what and why…

First, a reminder how the team did last season.

They won the league for the second year in a row, finishing twelve points clear of the team in second place;

They won the league cup and didn’t concede a single goal in the process;

Broughton Ravers U11 girls win the league titleIn both competitions the girls scored 87 goals and conceded just 13. Their goal difference [GD] of 74 compares well to Manchester United – who finished last season with a GD of 41  - and is many times better than Scunthorpe Utd who were relegated with a GD of -44 Frown

They played a total of 24 matches, won 21, drew 3 and lost none.

The girls were the N Lincs Council Young Team of the Year and are the Lincs FA Fair Play award winners, too.

Not a bad season…..Smile

As I said at the annual presentation day, I am not a big fan of player awards. Singling out individual players after a season of hard work by everyone and after telling them that there is no ‘i’ in team seems a bit inconsistent, to say the least.

That said, there have been some players who have worked just that little bit harder during training, listened to my words of wisdom more attentively and had a bigger smile on their faces during matches. So:

The Top Goalscorer and Penalty Shootout winner: Chloe, (Hot Shot Hopkinson), who scored an amazing 43 goals in just 22 appearances in league and cup.

Merit Awards: Macey and Lucy. Both players gave everything during matches, worked hard in training, played in any position and listened to me…sometimes anyway Smile

Most Improved: Leah. Leah impressed me with her dedication to the game, her refusal to accept a less than perfect personal performance and the way she has overcome the handicap of having to play in goal all last season to become an outstanding midfield player.

Player of the Year: Lauren. The team captain, Lauren led by example all season. She is skilful, very brave and will run and run until she drops. She also has a caring attitude towards her team-mates; I appreciate the way she has told me on more than one occasion that it’s time I put a sub on or gave a player a rest. Lauren also pays close attention to the few instructions I give her on match days and is a pleasure to coach.

Players’ Player of the Year: Alex. This is, perhaps, the most important award. Being PPOY means that your team-mates think you’re the best player in the team and I can’t think of a bigger compliment than that. The voting was close but Alex fully deserved to come on top.

I’m looking forward to next season already!
