OLD ACTONIANS 0 ENFIELD TOWN 7
Enfield Town Ladies complete a quick double over Old Actonians with a 7-0 away victory just days after beating them 2-0 at home. Sara Sinclair scored twice along with a Katie Wilding penalty and Claire Gooch, Miranda Hall, Emma Thomas and Leanne Mabey all netting once each. Enfield Town manager John Abbott said “it was a fantastic way to christen our new away strip and all the players gave me the performance that I wanted from start to finish. Although we scored 7 we could have had more but I am happy with what we got.” Enfield Town moved up to second place in the table.
Within the opening minute a clearance from Jo Ayre to Katie Wilding was played into the path of Emma Thomas who beat the defence but with just the keeper to confront her she sliced her shot wide. A Beth Demery free kick was cleared to Wilding who steadied herself and hitting a dipping shot that Ellis Kerr bid well to tip over the bar but the reprieve was short lived as the corner kick was cleared to Miranda Hall and her cross from a touch further out on the wing saw Acton defenders pushing out and Enfield captain Claire Gooch holding her ground and placing a precision header over the keeper who got a slight touch to it but couldn’t keep it out. 0-1 (4 min)
Enfield were streaming forward at every opportunity with Emma Thomas and Sheree Oliver feeding crosses in to Hall and Sara Sinclair. A great recovering tackle by Kerrie Coombs on Thomas prevented one attack with forwards queuing up waiting for the ball. Wilding won a tackle in the centre and pushed on herself past defenders and tried to go around the keeper but Kerr managed to get a touch at the expense of a corner. Wilding fired through a crowded area and Kerr did well to get down and push it away but Hall was onto it and returned it to Gooch who headed wide. Oliver and Hall exchanged passes before Oliver shot and Kerr pushed the ball up into the air and grabbed it as it came down. Thomas hit a firm low cross and Sinclair got in front of Kerr but steered her shot wide. Wilding picked out the run of Thomas but for once Thomas’s touch was too heavy and the ball ran to Kerr. Sinclair raced onto a poor back pass and rounded the keeper to tap the ball into the net but somehow the assistant referee flagged it off side.
A free kick in the corner caused a moment of confusion in Enfield’s area and the ball dropped to Chelsea Berlin who from a inside the six yard area hit a shot that hit a defender on the hand and was cleared. Thomas slid a perfect pass to Sinclair and her shot was deflected back to her off a defender and when she lifted the ball over the defender a second time Kerr again had to tip the ball over the bar. Thomas ran from the centre with the ball but Kerr got the better of the situation and saved her effort. After all the good play by Enfield the second goal came when Wilding crossed in from the right and Hall miss hit her shot but it still went under the keepers dive and in. 0-2 (38 min)
Thomas had a goal bound effort blocked by a defender and Wilding put the rebound over. Acton had a shot on target as Natalie Arbuckle volleyed a dropping ball in the area but Jo Ayre plucked it out of the air with ease. Another Enfield attack in the last minute of the half ended with a defender blocking the ball with her arm and the referee awarded a penalty that Wilding stepped up and scored. 0-3 (45 min)
Gooch was almost made to pay for a rare error as the ball wouldn’t roll out but as a forward went to cross the ball it was put behind for a corner. Thomas put in a low cross that Sinclair left for Hall but her shot was straight to the Kerr. Natalie Randall gave Arbuckle a chance but she shot narrowly across Enfield’s goal. Enfield were having more and more attacks as the hosts tired and one deep cross by Hall was just too far ahead of Demery but Sinclair got to it with Kerr producing a stunning point blank save to prevent a goal. From the corner by Demery Gooch headed goalwards but it was cleared off the line for another corner which unbelievably had the same outcome as Gooch had another header cleared off the line! Hall got around the back of the defence and laid the ball across to Sinclair who fired in after a touch to control the ball. 0-4 (59 min)
Almost from the kick off Leanne Mabey won the ball with a strong tackle and set off past tiring defenders before firing in a toe poke leaving Kerr clutching thin air. 0-5 (60 min)
Gooch fouled Arbuckle on the edge of the area but Ayre set up a defensive wall in the correct position and Randall hit the ball straight into it. Arbuckle attacked the area and after an Enfield defender dived in but missed the tackle she set up Linda Fox who shot to Ayre. The Acton keeper, a defender and Cally Browne all collided as the ball was played forward and Thomas collected the rushed clearance before shooting from distance into the vacant net. 0-6 (71 Min)
Thomas sent Sinclair away with a clever chip over the defence and Sinclair kept her composure to calmly lift the ball over Kerr and into the net. 0-7 (78 min)
Acton finally looked beaten but they still showed commitment as Enfield poured forwards with Sinclair just beaten to one ball in the area by Kerr and Kerr winning as Sinclair tried to lift another effort over her the same as before. Browne diverted a free kick toward the goal but a defender cleared it of the post, Kerrie Marlborough powered on down the left for Thomas to set up Sinclair to shoot wide, Oliver curled a shot to Kerr and a Sinclair cross was just a fraction too high for Thomas in Enfield’s final attack. Acton had the last effort of the game but a weak shot by Kelly Doyle failed to trouble Ayre.
Enfield Town M.O.M. was Katie Wilding for a solid performance in the centre of the pitch with strong tackling, passing and shooting.
