West Ham Ladies 5 – 1 Porstmouth
West Ham Under 16s won they first game in the pre season as they put the style in to thump Portsmouth five one. Using the Beckton training ground, West Ham used the size of the pitch to they advantage by switching the play and keeping possession of the ball for long periods of the time. The first half was mainly played the Portsmouth half and the deadlock was broken when Claire Huggins cut inside from the right and with clever pass put Megan Lewis in and she calmly placed the ball under the keeper. Shadai Miller was making her debut for Luke Berry really took over the game and it was her pass that put Faye Cook through and she cleverly lobbed the ball over the on rushing keeper. Shadai was playing in the middle with Nicole Learner and Faye Cook and these three really played the ball around Portsmouth and were never troubled as they controlled the game and picked passes out and were really the stars of the game. Two brilliant goals from Shadai really made her day and the first was a bit special. She picked up the ball and moved forward and with no pressure from Pompey she let fly from around thirty five yards and left the keeper with no chance and five mins later she decided to have a go straight from a corner which also flew in. The second half was ruined really by the whether but two goals were scored one from Portsmouth were West Ham Ladies stood still waiting for a offside and the Portsmouth striker scored and the second was scored by Faye Cook who had moved into a forward position by now slotted the ball into the corner after a lovely move form the West Ham ladies. The West Ham defence looked solid all game and were broke through a few times and one of them led to a penalty which Portsmouth smashed against the post but apart from that Sam Mitchell, Lillie Kershaw, Lauren Beard and Keegan Russell really did themselves proud. So the game finished five one and for the first time this pre season all the great football that West Ham played really showed that it can result in a win.
“I can not tell you how proud I am of the girls today. The girls have really been working hard in training and really trying to get out of this non winning run. Every player in the squad today proved that are going to give me a headache when I have to pick a starting 11 in upcoming matches. Shadai was the player the varied out play up today with her more direct passing and this spread to other players so by the end we were knocking the ball about as we do so well and then when the opportunity opened we were confident enough to knock the ball long to get the player through quicker. I was really proud of Sam Mitchell today as she played in the center and really took control of the defence and became a leader today and for that made me proud. Charlie in goal had a quiet day but when she had to do something she did well as she always does. I am always pleased with my midfield but today they were pure class, Any player who played in there really shined and the football played was out of this world. Strikers really worked hard and the running off the ball was magnificent. I was so happy today and really looking forward to next game now” A very happy Luke Berry said after the game yesterday.
